Abstract

The hypothesis that 2-toluidino-6-naphthalenesulfonate (TNS), a negatively charged probe for hydrophobic regions of proteins, may antagonize volatile anesthetics was tested in goldfish. TNS at 100 μM increased EC50 2-fold for halothane and 1.5-fold for isoflurane. High hydrophobicity and negative charge of TNS may play a key role for antagonization of volatile anesthetics.
