Abstract

The effect of pigmentation on the development of naphthalene cataract in the rabbit and rat is summarized and diseussed. It is concluded that in both species 1,2-dihydroxynaphthalene is the toxic agent; in the rat its enzymic formation is probably largely by way of polyphenol oxidase, whereas in the rabbit catechol reductase probably plays a crucial role.
