Abstract

IR irradiation of a boron thin film coated on a Si(001) wafer in the presence of Mg vapor in an Ar/O2 atmosphere results in the formation of magnesium borate nanotubes (see picture). The structural characterizations demonstrated that the nanotubes are single crystalline orthorhombic Mg3B2O6 (3 MgO⋅B2O3). The formation mechanism of this particular tubular morphology is discussed.
