Abstract
New nanotextured high temperature ceramic eutectic composites (eutectic phase spacing <100 nm) have been obtained. The phase spacings are 100 times smaller than in directionally solidified eutectics. The nanotextured ceramic eutectic composites are naturally self-assembled in one quick step by rapid cooling of the ternary oxide alumina-YAG(Y3Al5O12)-zirconia eutectic in an arc-image furnace. The new nanotextured eutectic ceramic composites will find applications as in-situ coating and component for use at ultra-high temperature. Periodic self-assembled structures forced to solidify by rapid quenching with phase spacings in the submicron and nano-range will result in interesting properties and applications, offering the challenge to design nanostructures tailored to specific applications by kinetic control during solidification.
