Abstract

Energy storage devices are the key focus of modern science and technology because of the rapid increase in global population and environmental pollution. In this aspect, sustainable approaches developing renewable energy storage devices are highly essential. Developing sustainable materials for sustainable energy devices in sustainable route is one of the critical challenges of modern world. Cellulose is one of the most prevalent biopolymers, which can be synthesized easily. In recent years, the nanoscale version of cellulose i.e. Nanocellulose (NC) and their derivatives have been rapidly explored in secondary batteries and supercapacitors. The current review article briefly demonstrates the current developments of NC and derived materials for energy storage applications. The scope of this review article is to explore the contribution of NC in modern energy technology. The major characteristics, synthetic approaches, and application forecasts of this special type of polymeric material have been concisely discussed. Moreover, the advantages and future prospects of NC for advancing energy storage technologies have also been precisely analyzed.
