Abstract

Surface stress has a profound effect on the mechanical and physical properties of nano-structured materials, especially of nanoporous materials. This paper begins with an overview of the theory of elasticity with surface stress. This is followed by the prediction of the effective elastic constants and coefficients of thermal expansion of nanoporous materials with spherical or cylindrical voids. It is shown that the elastic constants of nanoporous materials can be tailored to desired values through pore surface modification or coating.
