Abstract

Copper performs a various biological function in living organisms. Dysregulation of copper ions can lead to unwanted redox reactions (Haber - Weiss reaction) caused by an increase in the free copper concentration or to its deposition in various organs (brain, kidney, eye cornea). Wilson’s, Menkes’s and Alzheimer’s disease are the most frequently mentioned diseases which associated with dysregulation of copper ions. These diseases are currently treatable only in the early stages. However, monitoring of the free copper concentration is extremely necessary.
