Abstract

The International Society of Blood Transfusion Committee on Terminology for Red Cell Surface Antigens devised and now maintains a genetically based terminology and classification for blood groups. The committee currently recognises 308 antigens, 270 of which belong to one of 30 blood group systems. The widespread application of molecular genetical methods for predicting blood group phenotypes from genotypes has made the creation of a logical terminology for blood group genes (alleles) crucial. A small team currently working on a gene terminology suitable for routine application in transfusion medicine is planning to produce a draft early in 2009.
