Abstract

Desirable names have been shown to be related to a variety of positive characteristics. The present study was designed to assess agreement on names associated with attractiveness. Participants listed five names which they associated with each of the following: attractive females, attractive males, unattractive females, and unattractive males. With the exception of the name Michael for attractive males, there was little evidence of agreement for attractive and unattractive names. There were few differences in the frequencies of names listed in relation to the age, gender, or income of the participants. Michael was also among the top ten most often used baby names for Kansas, Missouri, and Texas in 1992. Only a few of the other top ten names in our samples were also among the top ten baby names for the three states. Names associated with attractiveness are not necessarily currently popular names for babies.
