Abstract

This article results from field research that describes a naming system based on birth order, namely Wayan, Made, Nyoman, and Ketut, as Balinese ethnic identities. Data analysis uses an interaction cycle consisting of various activities: data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verifying. The research objective is to describe the meaning of the naming system and its changes. The results of the study show that this naming system is not only a Balinese ethnic identity but also has social, cultural, psychological, and religious-magical meanings for the owner of the name. This meaning causes the Balinese to recognize the life cycle ritual of giving a name, namely nelubulanin. This ritual is an obligation for the parents in Bali.
