Abstract

A telephone survey was conducted in a group of Wisconsin patients previously diagnosed with atopic dermatitis/eczema in themselves or in household family members since 1979. In 30% to 40% of such respondents, the individuals could not recall such a skin problem; there was actually a somewhat lower frequency of correct recall (59%) for atopic dermatitis/eczema in the respondent himself or herself. These findings have important implications for the screening of those who might be vaccinated against smallpox if there were a threat of smallpox infection.
