Abstract

Effective spousal interaction is a crucial component in building a household, as it is the foundation for harmony and the cultivation of love. Due to economic considerations and work pressures, this aspect is often overlooked, as exemplified in a number of merchant families in Pasar Panjang, Kendari City. Nevertheless, a significant portion of these families manages to sustain their family life through various means. This study aims to elucidate how the traders in Pasar Panjang maintain family harmony in challenging circumstances to foster warm interactions between spouses. Utilizing qualitative data and employing the sadd al-dzari’ah approach, a pivotal theory in the field of usul fiqh, the study draws insights from interviews with four classes of merchant families and observations of their daily activities. The research reveals that despite diverse perspectives and understandings between merchant spouses on various matters, they share a common view on the importance of avoiding potential fractures in family life during difficult situations. Whether consciously or unconsciously, they are applying fundamental principles within sadd al-dzari’ah, which is a critical theory in the development of Islamic law.
