Abstract

As the social demand for men who were once considered as mere breadwinners to participate in child care increases, this study focused on a nurturing reality show <The Return of Superman> to examine the representation of men s child care and its sociocultural implications. As a result, narrative analysis showed that the program described the relationship of characters based on the social convention that the general caring is women’s duty while the men’s caring was ritualized by consumption activities such as using commercialized education programs, services and dining out. Also, instead of seeking for new examples of gender role, the program was reinforcing the myth of The family based on gender division. Lastly, though the difficulty of caring was revealed and the positive influence of men’s participation on caring was showed through the observation and interviews, the narration led from a married woman s perspective which anchors the text’s primary meaning strengthened the idea that men are less skilled than women in caring. Consequently, the narrative of the show reinforced the duty of parenthood by standardizing men’s child care model as entertainment and consumption instead of relieving women from caring duty.
