Abstract

DC and AC magnetizations of the perovskite ortho-vanadate compound SmVO 3 with GdFeO 3 structure were investigated by a SQUID magnetometer. The low field cooled magnetic susceptibility became negative between 68 and 122 K, and the negative remanent and spontaneous magnetizations were confirmed at 90 K with cooling fields below 10 kOe. These results are discussed on the basis of the molecular field theory for the N-type ferrimagnetism of V 3+ magnetic moments. By the present analysis, the ferrimagnetic transition temperature of T c=130 K, and the inter- and intra-sublattice exchange integrals of J AB/ k B=−62.5 K, J AA/ k B=−16.2 K and J BB/ k B=−13.8 K were obtained.
