Abstract

N,N -dimethylformamide (DMF) is a polar solvent termed the universal organic solvent because of its extensive miscibility with water and most common organic solvents. Often used in a variety of industrial processes, for example production of synthetic fibers, synthetic leather, polyurethane resin, surface coatings and obtaining pharmaceuticals products; DMF has high dipole moment (µ = 3,24 D) and high dielectric constant (? = 36,71 a 25°C). N,N -dimethylformamide is a common solvent for chemical reactions; on the other hand, can be utilized as precursor for various units ( -CHO, -CO, -NMe 2 , -CONMe 2 , - O, etc) due to its structure. DMF has been employed as dehydrating agent, as a source for a reducing agents, as ligand in the preparation of metallic complexes and as catalyst. Indeed, DMF has played an important role in organic synthesis.
