Abstract
Mammalian cell surfaces are coated with an array of glycans commonly capped with sialic acids (Sias). Sias are involved in cellular interactions including self-recognition. Humans have lost the capacity to make Neu5Gc, one of two Sias commonly found in mammals. Humans can incorporate Neu5Gc into their cell glycans from diets rich in red meat/dairy and also make circulating anti-Neu5Gc ABs. We assessed for the presence of Neu5Gc and ABs against this XE within the female reproductive tract.
