Abstract

Both free oligosaccharides (human milk oligosaccharides) and conjugated glycans (N-linked) are present in human milk. These indigestible carbohydrates found in human milk shape the gut microbiome of breastfed infants. The complexity of these glycans restricts their utility to a limited number of bacteria that can access these carbohydrates as a sole carbon source.
