Abstract
Direct N-methylation of 3,4-dimethoxyphenethylamine, 4-methoxyphenethylamine, tyramine, and 3-methoxytryamine, by refluxing each compound with a mixture of formaldehyde and formic acid in the presence of dimethylformamide, to the corresponding N-dimtthyl derivative in 45-86% yield is reported. The synthesis of macromerine from normetanephrine by a two-step methyl- ation, using diazomethane and formaldehyde-formic acid mixture, is also reported.
