Abstract

The crystal structure of N-benzyl-3,4-diphenyl-2-azetidinone, C22H19NO, shows that the relative configuration of the two chiral centres, C2 and C3, is trans. The N—C and C=O bond lengths in the β-lactam amide group are 1.33 (1) and 1.26 (1)A, respectively. The N atom is displaced 0.032 (9)A from the plane of its three attached atoms, i.e. C1 and C3 of the β-lactam ring, and C16 of the benzyl group.
