Abstract

Study Objectives: The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) estimates that 1 out of 10 U.S. youths abuse Vicodin® for euphoria at least once before graduating from high school. Since Vicodin® and other oral prescription narcotics contain acetaminophen (APAP), APAP poisoning may be an underestimated consequence of abuse. We examined the incidence of prescription narcotic abuse cases that required emergency medical evaluation and n-acetylcysteine therapy for toxic APAP levels.
