Abstract

In the course of an analysis by paper chromatography of the amino acids of a series of seed samples of species belonging to the family Mimosaceae, a sulphur-containing amino acid, different from those previously found in plants, was observed as the major constituent in a few species. The new amino acid was isolated in pure form from seeds of Acacia farnesiana Willd. Its elemental composition, and hydrolysis to l-djenkolic acid and acetic acid, indicate that the amino acid is N-acetyl- l-djenkolic acid (I). This conclusion was confirmed by synthesis.
