Abstract

Palatine tonsils, in addition to nasopharyngeal tonsils, have been assumed to be a mucosal inductive site for the antigens from respiratory route. However, our recent studies strongly suggest that palatine tonsils in rabbits are the mucosal inductive site for the antigens in oral cavity rather than nasal cavity. I will reexamine the role of palatine tonsils as an inductive site for mucosal immunity, and discuss the differences between palatine tonsils and nasal-associated lymphoid tissue in mucosal immunity.
