Abstract

This study was motivated by an interesting property reported in MST neurons : their directional selectivity to optical stimuli was reversed as the area of stimuli was expanded. We considered these neurons play an important role in figure-ground discrimination, and attempted to make a neural network model to reproduce the reversal of directional selectivity. We used other model neurons in areas MT and MST with physiological relevant properties. The simulation of the model showed that it could elaborately mimic such reversal. We argued that the 'reversal' cell in area MST would indicate the direction of a target against a moving background. We also discussed the roles of other model neurons in motion detection.
