Abstract

We analyzed 31 cases of enchondromas of the hand, treated surgically at our department over the past 22 years (1971-1992). Patients ranged in age from two to 59 years (mean; 35.2 years) and there were 9 male patients and 22 females. There were 27 cases of the solitary type and four cases of multiple type, including one case of Maffucci syndrome. The proximal phalanx was most commonly involved in enchondroma and the middle phalanx, the metacarpal and the distal phalanx followed. The most frequent initial symptom was pain in 25 cases. In 12 of the 25 cases with pain, pathological fracture was found radiologically. In one case only curettage was carried out. In 29 cases curettage and bone graft were done. In one case curettage and hydroxyapatite and Kiel bone graft was performed. At one year after operation, consolidation of the grafted bone was satisfactory in all cases. Recurrence was seen in only one case.
