Abstract

SUMMARY This paper proposes a new concept of an electric power delivery system for future decades. The power deliv ery nelwork consists of a sei of meshed nelworks spread over every demand-side block (city or lown). On the end point of the power line network, improvement fa cilities (referred lo as quality improvement centers) are inslalled. and each consumer can selecl an arbitrary of e1ectricily. Thus lhe syslem can achieve multi-menu services and uninterrupted power supp1y. The system con tains smalJ-scale energy storage and dispersed small-scale power generation systems. The main circuit breakers consist of power electronics devices. and communication networks are fully installed so as to control lhe power e1ectronics devices or power f10w according to system situations or lhe fault situations. The communication network also controls the demand-side management. From the above, the pro posed power delivery network is f1exible and reliable. The intelligent facilities (compulers) are installed in the control centers as well as in the improvement cenlers. They keep lhe system as the most energy-conservalive formo In this paper, lhe system is named FRIENDS (Flexible. Reli able and Intelligent Electrical eNergy Delivery system). The conclusion of this paper summarizes the major research areas lhat must be completed to realize the system. © 1997 Scripta Technica. Inc. Electr Eng Jpn, 121( I); 26-34, 1997
