Abstract

An ischial weight bearing orthosis is often used by patients who were operated on for a fracture or non union of the lower extremities in order to obtain both rigid fixation and exemption from weight bearing while standing or walking. But with the orthosis, especially in women, it is always difficult to care for excretion by themselves. This problem disturbs their social activities. We improved the ischial weight bearing orthosis to solve this problem. The proximal part of the upright bar of the new orthosis was designed to slide down about 10 to 15cm with a pin lock system. This new orthosis was applied to a 52-year-old female who was operated on for non union and osteomyelitis of the femoral shaft by a vascularized fibular graft, and a 21-year-old female who was operated on for an osteosarcoma by rotation plasty. The new orthosis permited them to take care of excretion by themselves with ease and to walk without weight bearing. We believe that the new orthosis contributed to the quality of life of these patients.
