Abstract

An approximate expression of the bending solution of spherical shells in the vicinity of a boundary is derived in axi- and antisymmetric states, which makes easy to evaluate the stress disturbance due to boundary constraints in engineering practice and makes clear the influence of conical angles, radius-thickness ratio and loading type on it. This paper also provides explicit expression of the positions of zero value and extremum value of stresses and displacement components. These positions manifest the area of so-called edge zone, where stresses due to bending moments become dominant.
