Abstract

A case of psychogenic hearing loss in a 16-year-old girl is reported. The patient complained of right facial nerve palsy initially, but had no hearing loss at that time. After the first steroid treatment for her facial nerve palsy, no improvement was noted. When the second treatment was started, bilateral hearing loss with tinnitus, right ear pain and dizziness developed. Neurological examinations were unremarkable, and a brain CT examination was negative. The bilateral hearing loss did not improve, and limited visual fields were also noted. A consultation with a psychiarist strongly suggested the possibility of a psychogenic origin for hearing loss. We assumed that the prolonged clinical course of her facial palsy might have resulted in hearing loss in this case.
