Abstract

Changes in vascularization on the articular disk of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) under the condition of unilateral mastication in rats were observed.Forty 8-week-old male Wistar rats were used. In 20 rats, the right upper 3 molar teeth were extracted and the right upper incisal was amputated at the gingival margin. The other 20 rats were served as controls. After 4 months, the rats were killed and the articular disks of TMJ were dissected carefully. After fixation in 10% formaldehyde, the specimens were embedded in paraffin, and 20μ thick serial sections were cut along the longitudinal axis of the articular disk. After Peroxidase staining according to the Graham-Karnovsky method and staining with Methyl green, the specimen weres observed microscopically. The following findings were obtained;1. In 9 rats of the experimental group, vascularization was found.2. Vascularization was found on the articular disks of TMJ of both the operated and the unoperated side.
