Abstract

This study was carried out to elucidate acid-base imbalance in calves with abomasal bloat. Biochemical properties of the blood from 6 of 8 calves with abomasal bloat prior to and on the seventh day after treatment with metoclopramide were compared with those of 6 healthy calves. Blood-gas evaluation suggested that compensated metabolic hypochloremic hypokalemic alkalosis was caused by accumulation of gastric juice trapped in the abomasum following pyloric obstruction.
