Abstract
This paper discusses the present status of quality of steels and application engineering and technical trend of carburizing steel.Motorvehicles use many different materials such as steel, aluminum, copper, plastic, glass, rubber etc. Today, one of the major topics of automotive material is an application of new material, ceramic for example, in diesel engine parts and many sensor parts.However, the steels used for many important automotive components, engines and transmissions, are still carbon and alloy steels. As a result of recent improvement of steel quality, many automotive steel parts have attained high level of reliability while becoming lighter in weight.There is however increasing need to improve quality of carburizing steel as it is mainly used in transmission and differential gears, the noise level of which need to be lowered, strength of which must be increased and its machinability must be improved.Accordingly, steel makers and automotive manufactures are working together to further improving quality of carburizing steel.
