Abstract

In this paper, the results of Charpy impact test of unplasticized P.V.C. having various types of specimen are described. From the absorbed energy vs. temperature diagrams, they tried to find the limiting condition for brittle fracture of such material. It was decided that any piece having the appearance of brittle fracture shows no higher resistance than the absorbed energy of about 15kg·cm/cm2. Notwith standing that the prismatic specimen of ordinary type having no slight defect on its surface, exhibits very strong resistance, the excessive decrement of its strength appears when it has a sharp and even shallow notch. In order to get more accurate judgement of the affect of notch in the plate type specimen, it is preferable to select the proper depth of very sharp notch for given testing temperature.
