Abstract
Synthesis of kaolinite from silica-rich zeolites such as clinoptilolite, heated clinoptilolite, and heulandite was studied. When clinoptilolite is used as a starting material, kaolinite forms in acid solutions of AlCl3 at>200°C after 1 to 14 days, while at>250°C from heulandite and heated clinoptilolite . However, no kaolinite crystallizes in the absence of AlCl3. The results of X-ray diffraction, infrared absorption spectroscopy, and differential thermal analysis indicate that the ease of formation of kaolinite appears to decrease in the order of clinoptilolite > heulandite > heated clinoptilolite. Appearance of the kaolinite crystallized were observed by scanning electron microscopy, and the mechanism of formation of kaolinite is briefly discussed.
