Abstract

We investigated the effect of nurse-shoes on the feet of nurses in our hospital by questionnaire. 117 (61.9%) nurses answered that they had some body problems and 102 admitted to having foot problems. However 108 nurses were found to have some pathological feet conditions when examined by one of the authors. The majority of problems were painful dermatological conditions of the forefoot such as corns, calluses and painful hyperkeratosis on the medial margin of the first toe or lateral margin of the heel. Most corns were found on the lateral side of the fifth toe. 16 nurses had hallux valgus. We found that indication of the shoe-size was inaccurate, with most nurses wearing shoes that were too small for their feet. The nurse-shoe has only one width for each size and these were the main causes of feet problems among nurses in this hospital.
