Abstract

Eight kinds of metals including gold, silver, and six elements of the platinum group (Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, Pt) are termed precious metals. Gold and silver have been especially valued since ancient times because of their excellent physico-chemical properties, scarcity, and beautiful metallic luster. In contrast to gold and silver, the platinum group metals might becalled the modern precious metals.Recently, the demand for gold, silver and platinum group metals has increased because of their applications in industries such as electronics, electroplating, photography, and emission control catalysis. Consequently, it is necessary to establish recycling technologies for scraps containing precious metals. This paper will describe some examples of practical perations to recover precious metals such as gold, silver, and platinum from scraps.
