Abstract

We present a case of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma which arose from the pterygoid fossa of a 7-year-old child. She complained of exophthalmos and swelling of the cheek. A tumor involving the skull base was revealed. On the first biopsy specimen, fibrosarcoma was suspected. However, pathological diagnosis of the resected specimen was malignant non-epithelial tumor. She was treated with surgery, radiation and combined chemotherapy. They were only temporarily effective and she died of respiratory failure due to invasion of the brain. After death, we investigated the specimen again and obtained a definitive pathological diagnosis of rhabdomyosarcoma.
