Abstract

In the beam theory, the upper face and the lower face of a sandwich beam are solved independently. As for the core of that, two cases are treated comparatively in the plane stress problem, one considering the shear stress and only the transverse normal stress, the other all the three stresses. The upper face and the lower face are combined by introducing the conception of "symmetric" and "antisymmetric" bending, so that the relation is made clear between socalled EULER-type buckling and one with flattening. The present paper deals with sandwicz beams with elastic orthotropic cores under axial compression with two ends simply supported. Finally, owing to the consideration of flattening, prebuckling deformation can be analyzed in short beams as well as cylindrical shells.
