Abstract

We have treated two patients with foreign body reactions to a hearing aid battery in the external ear canal. Both were elderly users of the canal type of hearing aid. The button battery produced severe tissue destruction. One of the patients had total facial paralysis. A button battery foreign body in the external ear canal can produce extensive necrosis. A review of the literature shows that elderly users are at high risk. The authors stress that otolaryngologists should take part in the selection of hearing aids and provide detailed advice about their use, especially by elderly users.
