Abstract

For studying possibilities of applying excimer lasers to medical use, we tested the hollow light guide of which may be used in KrF and ArF excimer laser power delivery system. The hollow light guide uses aluminum-phosphor bronze thin plates and thin teflon slub as its material. The hollow light guide provides KrF laser transmittance of 75%/m in straight state. ArF laser transmittance of helium gas filled hollow light guide was obtained 71%/m. The excimer laser scalpel with this hollow light guide is manufactured for trial. As a result, KrF excimer laser scalpel has marked a delivery laser energy of about 100 mJ/pulse, a value enough for incising hard biotissues such as bone.
