Abstract
At the end of May, 1981, extraordinary cold weather attacked the Soya district, Hokkaido, causing great damage on grazing cattle which had been placed on pasture just before. For the prevention of such damage, the following steps should be taken in future: to increase shelter belt, windbreak, and shed of refuge in the pasture, additional supply of hay, and careful supervision and health management especially at the beginning of grazing. A period of acclimatization should be set up for cattle before the placement on pasture. It should be one month for cattle which have never been on pasture before and 2 weeks for cattle experienced in grazing. A paddock may be used for acclimatization.
