Abstract

Two procedures are described for the sensitive spectrographic determination of 0.023 ppm of boron in graphite for nuclear reactor. In the first method, preliminary concentration is carried out by the removal of the graphite by ashing in the presence of La2O3. Then the contents of boron in La2O3 are determined by the carrier-distillation method. In the second method, the sample in the form of powder is compressed into pellets with the aid of a phenol-formaldehyde resin as binding medium, and these are arced at 7 A (d.c.). By means of display microphotometry, the peak height of B at 2497.73 Å is compared with that of the NO(γ) band component at 2497.14 Å.
