Abstract

Based on a microscopic observation of external-morphological changes of Pharbitis shoot apices, the shoot apex stages were determined, the ages of shoot apices were expressed numerically, and the initiation rates of leaf primordia were calculated graphically. The initiation of leaf primordia at the shoot apex was accelerated by flowerinductive dark treatments. This acceleration was evident, even before the floral organ was recognized under dissecting microscope, within three to four days after an inductive dark period. It may be said that the first sign of flower initiation is an acceleration of the initiation rate of leaf primordia at the shoot apex.
