Abstract

Clothing acts as a factor that allows you to better understand the culture of a particular people. The type of ornamentation presented on the shirts of Polissya retains the genetic connection with the earliest archaic principles of embroidery. The type of ornament is preferably geometric, serving as an indicator of their ancient origin. For Polissya shirts, it is inherent in the use of simple figures – squares rhombus that bear a profound symbolic meaning. Combinations created by repeating the data of figures and their combination with others – broken lines, dots - allows you to create more complex images (octagons, octagonal stars, groups of quadrilaterals, separated by a cross), which combine into curbs. The semantics of these ornaments, connected with those phenomena, which directly influenced the cultures engaged in agricultural activity – heavenly bodies, duality of male and female principles, and others. Prospects for further research are to outline the more precise meaning of each of the elements of ornaments used in shirts of the regions of Ukraine, including through the use of a comparative approach that will allow analogy with the symbols of other ethnic cultures .
