Abstract

A survey was conducted on the incidence of urolithiasis in dogs and the composition of calculi by collecting 126 specimens from practitioners in Yokohama City (63%) and other areas in Japan. Chemical analysis indicated that phosphate was the main constituent of calculi in 102 dogs, oxalate in 12 dogs, urate in 10 dogs, and cystine in 2 dogs. The mean age of the 102, 12, 10, and 2 dogs was 6.7, 9.0, 6.4, and 7.0 years, respectively. Most calculi (96%) were located in the bladder or in the bladder and urethra. Recurrent calculi developed in 17 cases. They were composed of phosphate in all the cases, but one. Reoccurrence was seen in 11 cases within one year.
