Abstract
For the fundamental study on the recovery of elemental sulfur from smelter gas, thermodynamical equilibrium calculations were carried out by using a computer about the system containing such elements as S, O, H, and C. The ratio of formed elemental sulfur to the total amount of sulfur in a system was expressed by a simple way as a function of gas composition or equilibrium temperature. Some principal results of the calculations are as follows;1. For obtaining a maximum formation of elemental sulfur, the amount of oxigen must exactly be the equivalent amount required to oxidize hydrogen and carbon.2. If sulfide ores are roasted at 1200 or 1400K in a O2-H2O gas mixture without carbonaceous reducing agents, more than 25 moles of H2O is required to form 1 mole of elemental sulfur.3. Above about 600K, the presence of H2O causes the formation ratio of elemental sulfur to decrease, because the formed elemental sulfur reacts with H2O to become H2S and SO2.
