Abstract
This paper describes the distance education system using electronic teaching materials recorded on CD-ROM. To meet the learning demands and motivation of busy engineers, the authors developed the distance education system by CD-ROM liberating the learners from learning location and time constraints. The authors carefully studied the authoring method, contents of table for easy access to the desired part of the contents by one click, and encoding/decoding schemes of audiovisual information. To facilitate the production of CD-ROM contents, the specific authoring scheme was developed to make full use of the accumulated stock of the digital videotape recorded live lectures released by the satellite transmission system. The production days required for a content were dramatically reduced from more than two weeks with conventional authoring scheme to 0.5-1 day with the proposed scheme. The authors evaluated the sample CD-ROM so produced by providing to the learners for practical application and confirmed the high level of satisfaction on part of the learners. The same contents provided by the conventional videotapes were also evaluated for the sake of comparison.
