Abstract

This paper develops, an analytical approach to estimation of earthquake-like random response of multi-story base isolated structures with damping characteristics. The second order moments of the earthquake response of multi-story base isolated structures are obtained by solving a simple simultaneous first order algebraic equation. The criterion "selected for optimality is the earthquake response of the superstructure. The optimum yielding strength of the base isolation system is determined by the solution of the extreme value problem for the objective function defined as the combinations of the earthquake response of the superstructure.
