Abstract

An apparent diffusion coefficient was defined as an index of transport rate of liquids through wood by analogy to Fick's diffusion coefficient, even though the entire processes of penetration into wood would be different from those of actual diffusion. All measurements were carried out on Western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla Sargent), in the tangential direction, using several pure solvents and aqueous solutions of inorganic, organic or polymer compounds. From those results, some relations between the diffusion coefficients and physical properties of liquids were obtained qualitatively or quantitatively. In order to get further relationships between them we examined dimensional analyses. As a result, the apparent diffusion coefficients were considered to be a function of a few components which control the diffusion rate and the kinematic viscosity of liquids. It was found that the apparent diffusion coefficients can be calculated from physical property data.
