Abstract

Rumen ciliate protozoa were obtained from the rumen fluids of sheep, and incubated anaerobically in salt buffer solution containing 50μg/ml of streptomycin in the presence of L-Trp in vitro. When L-Trp was added to the medium, in which the number of protozoa was 2.2×105/ml, in different levels of 0.1 and 1.0mg/ml, 48 and 65μg/ml of L-Trp was degraded, respectively after the incubation for 6 hours. Indole-3-acetic acid was found in the medium after incubation by paper chromatography and ultraviolet absorption spectrum, and 30_??_50% of L-Trp degraded was converted to indole-3-acetic acid.
