Abstract

Our patient with malignant fibrous histiocytoma was a sixty-year-old woman. She had complained of hoarseness and sometimes of dysphonia during speaking. In the larynx, an irregular, light yellow-colored, pedunculated tumor measuring 1cm in diameter was observed on the anterior third portion of the right vocal cord. There was also incomplete glottal closure at phonation. The laryngeal tumor was removed from the right vocal cord using a cold forceps through a laryngomicroscope under modified N. L. A. Histopathological findings of the excised tumor showed infiltration of fibroblastic and histiocytic cells into the connective tissue (so-called storiform pattern) and numerous bizarre cells and polymorphic cells. The appearance of cells ranged from a mononuclear histiocytic form to a multinucleated giant cell form. This coincides with the pathology of the so-called malignant fibrous histiocytoma.Irradiation in a total of 50Gy was administered immediately after operation together with oral PSK and intramuscular OK-432. No recurrence was seen for 14 months postoperatively. Hoarseness and dysphonia disappeared.
